{"id":141,"date":"2013-10-29T19:12:50","date_gmt":"2013-10-30T03:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/?page_id=141"},"modified":"2017-01-08T09:08:39","modified_gmt":"2017-01-08T17:08:39","slug":"mtn-elf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/?page_id=141","title":{"rendered":"*MTN ELF*"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>&#8220;WHERE THE HELL DID YOU LEARN TO DRAW?\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">I was introduced to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mad_%28magazine%29\">MAD Magazine<\/a> (the late 60s version) when I was in elementary school (at around age 10). I was an instant fan. I started trying to draw my own comics to amuse my classmates. I learned by the \u201cMonkey see \u2013 Monkey do\u201d method of copying the styles I saw in the magazine. While I admired all the various drawing styles, my drawings tended to be more <a href=\"http:\/\/www.donmartinwebsite.com\/\">Don Martin-ish.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">But MAD Magazine was despised by my father, and he considered it to be such a bad influence that it was not allowed in the house. So while I liked drawing pictures where the faces were either really goofy or exaggeratedly scary, such buffoonery was frowned on by my disapprovarian father. And when he disliked something his belt was not far behind. He wanted me to be serious. Or at least to draw NICE pictures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">And so I learned to keep my drawings hidden, and only showed them to my friends at school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">During High School I kept a manila folder with a collection of my comics. People could borrow it to read them, but I wasn&#8217;t making any copies. (You had to use the xerox machine at the public library, which cost a dime a copy, and my pencil drawings copied like crap)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">At age 18 I graduated from HS, and the next December my father threw me out of the house. Apparently somewhere on the list of the things I was not allowed to do was \u201cRecovering live WWII naval munitions while scuba diving\u201d.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">One of the ways my father<\/span> showed his displeasure was by drilling holes in me and my brothers scuba tanks.<br \/>\nMy mother and brother left the house at the same time as I did. There were some tough times. I had planned to get a Marine Biology Technician degree from Shoreline CC, but dropped out to get a burger flipping job instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Paper-400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-674 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Paper-400.jpg\" alt=\"Paper 400\" width=\"400\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Paper-400.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.elvanpyres.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Paper-400-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><em>Did you think I was <strong>joking<\/strong>?\u00a0 (Dec. 16, 1976,\u00a0 Vol. 62\u00a0 No. 171\u00a0\u00a0 20 cents)<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><i>(The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memorieshop.com\/Seattle\/LakeWashington\/Shipyards.html\">Lake Washington Shipyards<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houghtonlives.com\/houghton history\/history.htm\">Houghton<\/a> built ships during the WWII and stored decommissioned ships after the war \u2013 obviously some stuff got tossed over the sides)<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">That spring an exciting new magazine hit the stands: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Heavy_Metal_%28magazine%29\">Heavy Metal!<\/a><br \/>\nI was amazed by all the differing art styles in the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">magazine and became a regular reader. I was especially impressed by the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">comic<a href=\"http:\/\/theairtightgarage.tumblr.com\/post\/1722954710\/is-man-good-page-1\"> \u201cIs Man Good?\u201d<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Giraud\"><span style=\"font-weight: medium;\">Moebius <\/span>(Jean Giraud<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: medium;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Giraud\">)<\/a>.<\/span> I liked the way it told an interesting short story without using any dialog. (Plus it even has Don Martinesque <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">sound effects!) <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">I very much wanted to be a comic artist and I spent a lot of time drawing.\u00a0 But I couldn&#8217;t see a path to that career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">I did try to take one art class at the local community college. The instructor would give a short lecture, set a ball on a pedestal and tell us to draw, then he went off to get coffee or something. After a week we moved up to a bowl of fruit. Later he told us to go outside and draw buildings. I was drawing some stupid building and thought \u201cHow the hell is this teaching me draw funny faces?\u201d so I said \u201cScrew this!\u201d and never went back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">I eventually got an AAS degree in Electronics from NSCC. I&#8217;ve enjoyed hiking, mountain climbing (I&#8217;ve summited Mt.
